Maximize Your Commercial Solar Savings With the 50% ITC Stack

You can reduce your solar installation costs by 50% using federal tax credits. These credits provide massive savings for your commercial property investments. Follow these steps to maximize your total benefit.

The Three-Layer ITC Stack

Layer 1: Base ITC — 30%

Under §48, you receive a 30% credit on your qualifying solar property. This applies to the full cost of panels, racking, inverters, labor, and electrical upgrades.

Layer 2: Domestic Content Bonus — 10%

You gain an extra 10% credit when your equipment meets domestic content rules. Your solar panels must have U.S. manufactured cells. Your racking and mounting systems must also be U.S. made. All steel and iron components must be 100% domestically produced. You claim this by filing Form 3468 with an attestation statement. Always keep your manufacturer certifications on file.

Layer 3: Energy Community Adder — 10%

You receive another 10% credit if your project sits in a qualifying energy community census tract. Use the lookup tool in Article #22 to verify your location. You claim this on Form 3468 by including your census tract documentation.

Layer 4: Prevailing Wage and Apprenticeship Bonus

Projects over 1 MW require your contractor to pay prevailing wages and use registered apprentices. Most commercial rooftop projects under 1 MW qualify for this bonus automatically without these requirements.

Total Stack Example

For a $2,000,000 commercial solar system on an Energy Community site using domestic content:

  • Base ITC (30%): $600,000
  • Domestic Content Bonus (10%): $200,000
  • Energy Community Adder (10%): $200,000
  • **Total ITC: $1,000,000 (50% of your total cost)

You also gain 100% bonus depreciation for 5-year property. This generates a $740,000 deduction in Year 1. At a 37% tax bracket, this adds approximately $274,000 in savings.

Tax Credit Absorption

The ITC is a general business credit under §38 that offsets your federal income tax liability. You carry forward any excess credit for 20 years if your tax liability is too low. Review Article #23 for detailed absorption planning.
